I am glad that when I decided to try the medicus for the first time seven years ago, that I opted to go with the medicus 5 iron. For most of us amateurs, it’s a lot easier to control the swing of an iron than a wood or a driver. Speaking from experience, it was also a lot easier for me to master the medicus 5 iron versus the driver. In fact, I owned and practiced with the Medicus 5 iron for about six years before I purchased the driver, but even after all that 5 iron practice, it still took some significant practice time to master the medicus driver.

Another important point worth mentioning is that the dual hinge on every medicus club is tension adjustable so that you can tighten it up with a hex wrench (that comes with the club) so that it doesn’t break quite as easy when you first start out. With the ability to continue to loosen the tension on the dual hinge adjustment from one practice session to the next (which will cause the club to break easier from flaws in your swing), you fill find that even the medicus irons will keep challenging you for quite some time.

If you are considering trying out the medicus to try to improve the consistency of your swing, you might want to start out with a shorter (and lower cost) medicus iron like the 5 or 7 iron, master that and then work your way up to the driver.

For most of us, Golf is a tough game to learn so a good approach might be to take baby steps to build that consistent swing. Smaller, methodical steps may make your medicus experience a lot more productive and enjoyable!

I was watching the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the weekend and was reminded again of how much Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson seem to go crazy with their shot shaping. Tiger in particular hits so many of those massive fades and Bubba Watson does those draws with his irons that are more like hooks. They seem to make these shots work a good share of the time, but it also seems like they don’t work out a lot of the time too. When Tiger hits his driver in particular, it looks like sometimes he’s lined up with the left rough or left tree line and then just absolutely crushes it on that line. Sometimes the ball fades back to the fairway, but a fair number of times you will see that his drives don’t make it back and miss the fairway left.

Why not hit the straighter shot I say? Well, if I ever join the ranks of the pros maybe I’ll have the answer to that.

Ever since I purchased my medicus 5 iron around seven years ago, I have always worked on trying to hit the straight shot. Today when I miss a fairway with my irons or metals, it is usually because of push or a pull because my timing is off, but rarely do I hit a hook or a slice. I think I can largely thank the medicus for that consistency because it really doesn’t allow you to go to far from the inside or the outside as you approach the ball with the club. If my timing Is on, and I put a decent strike on the ball (don’t chunk or thin it) the medicus literally keeps my swing on a plane that results in a shot that wants to go straight.

For us amateurs, curving a ball around bunkers to land on a 20 yard wide fairway is not something we have worry about, so I am thinking the straight shot is the shot amateurs ought to work on hitting.

If your swing causes you to swing on an inside out or outside in swing plane and the result is lots of unwanted hooks or slices, then the medicus just might be a training aid that could get your shots straightened out. Before you buy a medicus, be sure that you have made up your mind that you will give it an honest effort. Like any golf swing training aid aimed at correcting an inconsistent swing, it will take some persistence!

I’ve decided that 2012 is going to be the year that I try to create that consistent PGA swing speed that I have always wanted.

I believe it’s within reach since in recent years I have been getting longer with my drives and have even flirted with 300 yards on occasion.

I did a little research and learned that the average swing speed on the PGA is in that 110MPH to 115MPH range.

A couple of weekends ago I was out in the back yard for the first time this year with my red, white and blue drivers which consist of a Medicus Powermaximus driver, an R11 Taylor Made Driver (with the Medicus PowerMeter attached) and dual hinged Medicus driver.

I have had these medicus training tools for well over a year but life has been busy so I have not been using them consistently.

I use the dual hinge driver to keep my swing on plane and the maximus driver to work on my “speed” muscles. My hope is that together they will allow me to build a faster wing, but also one that won’t spray the ball everywhere but the fairway.

I noticed that when I started swinging my regular driver (with the Medicus PowerMeter attached) that my speeds were all over the map. There was no consistency. I took what felt like a hard on-plane swing that would register a speed of 85 MPH, and then I’d take another that felt similar and would get 97 MPH. A 12 MPH difference in swing speed with a similar feeling swing? This was as confusing as it was frustrating. After several more swings and similar inconsistent readings it began to dawn on me just how complicated the golf swing is….how the smallest differences in a swing can yield wildly different results! I continued my practice session and tried a few different things to see if I could get more consistent readings. One thing I tried was to lag the club head as long as possible before letting it release and found that on some swings, my speed went up significantly (even a few over 100MPH) but I was still getting differences of 10-15MPH in swing speed. On one swing I’d be at 106 MPH and the next 90 MPH.

After struggling with several more wildly inconsistent swings, the next thing I tried was to take a much wider takeaway, keep my left arm as straight as possible and turn my shoulders and torso until they literally hurt from the tension. I don’t know why this made such a difference, but I immediately found that this one adjustment allowed me to get a lot more consistent with the swing speed. Even my easier swings were hitting the 90’s and I found I could stay consistently in the 90’s with a “controllable” swing. It’s almost like the extra width and extra coiling of my shoulders and torso made my body want to naturally release with more power. After several more of these wide coiled swings, I began to realize that I was onto something. I also realized that my wrists and back were getting sore and that I should probably shut it down or risk an injury. I probably went a little too hard for a first session, and even got a blister on my right hand to show for it, but I think I might be onto something with this coiling move! It will be interesting to see if I can get similar results the next time I practice.

If it’s within your means, you might want to consider picking up a swing speed measuring device like the Medicus PowerMeter because it truly can reveal a lot about your swing in a very short period of time.

Although I have used the Medicus dual-hinge products for years now and have built a pretty good swing with them, I am relatively new to the PowerMeter and look forward to sharing more of my experiences about this helpful device.

I have been practicing for about a year now with my dual hinge driver. Although i had trained with the medicus 5 iron for many years prior to trying the driver, I found that the dual hinge driver was still pretty hard to master. It took quite a few practice sessions to groove the swing to the point that the dual hinge stayed locked throughout the entire swing. I guess i shouldn’t be too surprised since the driver is considered by most as the hardest of the clubs to swing, so why would the medicus driver be any different?

Now that i can swing the medicus driver without breaking it, i find that it is an excellent warm up tool to prepare for a round or even a practice session at the driving range. Four or five swings with my medicus and i am typically ready to hit my regular driver. It can really help me to hit the ball straight for several shots in a row, but if my shots start to go offline, i simply grab it again and swing a few more times to get my swing back on track.
